We are saddened to hear of the passing of Ray Brooks on 9 August 2025, aged 86. Ray was the warm, distinctive voice behind the 1985–1988 Rupert television series, narrating all 36 five-minute adventures that brought the world of Nutwood and Alfred Bestall's illustrations to life for a new generation.
His gentle storytelling style perfectly matched the still-image format of the series, making each tale feel like a cherished bedtime story. For many fans, Ray’s voice is inseparable from memories of Rupert’s kindness, curiosity, and timeless adventures.
Though his career spanned many acclaimed roles, to the followers he will always be the voice that carried us into Nutwood. Although he might have found the series and our chums not ''bear-able'', his contribution to Rupert’s legacy will be fondly remembered.
